Different Local Authorities have different interpretations of their duty to monitor/support home educated children. The approach they take varies from area to area. Some Local Authorities are clear on their duties and the extent of their powers and are supportive of home educating famililies and understanding of the different approaches home educating parents/carers take to their childrens education.

Some Local Authorities however legally and morally overstep the mark in imposing upon families their view of what home education should 'look like'. At best this is down to the Authority having a poor understanding of the law and their responsibilities under it. At worst this is due to the dubious ulterior motives of the Local Authority staff with responsibility for home education.

This site is a collation of information about Local Authorities and their staff with responsibility for the inspection/monitoring of home educated children. The aim being that home educating parents and families can share information and experiences of their Local Authority staff.

Hopefully this information will help home educating parents decide if, and to what level, they are prepared to engage with LA staff.
